1cy Caspian Gull / Larus cachinnans, Westkapelle - sea dike (The Netherlands) on 2 September 2009
Pictures of two different 1cy Caspian Gulls on the sea dike of Westkapelle, the first 1cy's of autumn 2009. Individual one in the first three pictures shows a classic plumage. Note the head and bill-shape, the pattern of the new second generation scapulars, tertial pattern, the long legs especially the tibias and long pointed wings. The inner greater coverts show diffuse pale barring/markings which forms clear white tips on the feathers. On the stretched wing in the third picture you see the typical pattern of the inner primaries; pale inner and dark outer webs creating a "venetian blind" pattern. The tail-bar is broad and directly above the band is some small black barring. In comparison with the first three pictures, individual two in the last picture has more prominent barring in the inner greater coverts, less white on the tertials tips, etc...
