1cy Herring Gull / Larus argentatus, Westkapelle - sea dike (The Netherlands) on 5 November 2010
Nicest pale individual I have seen in 2010 so far. Compare with this pale 1cy and this one which all photographed on the same day. Note the short pink legs and the moult stage, all wing feathers are still juvenile which often suggest a more northern origin. On the picture of this gull in flight note the pale spots on the tips of the primaries, pale tips on the secondaries, heavy pale marked greater coverts and the tail pattern which show four small black bars and much white. The pattern on the juvenile scapulars and tertials reminiscent to patterns show by 1cy Glaucous Gulls. Combination of moult stage and feather pattern suggest probably some influence of Glaucous Gull. Hard to say because we can't prove it, and we can't exclude the very pale end of nominate argentatus.
