As known, Le Portel in France is one of the best place to see Mediterranean Gull. Every autumn a large number of Mediterranean Gull congregate in this place. Many individuals are also color or metal ringed and they come to Le Portel from all over Europa. Itís always very impressive to see so many Mediterranean Gull from so many different countries. In the above picture you see the city Le Portel, and below the houses the basalt slope where many of the Mediterranean Gulls roosting during the autumn. Here below a small section of pictures which are taken while visiting Le Portel in 2007 and 2008.

Note the moult in the wing-coverts, all scapulars except one lower, the upper tertials and a few (inner) median and some lesser coverts are replaced by fresh grey feathers. Note the pattern on the outer worn rectrices which show a nearly complete white tip.

An example of a ringed 1cy bird from Poland. Nearly all coverts are still juvenile, but all scapulars are replaced by plain grey adult-like feathers. Note the dark mask behind the eye and black streaks over the nape and ear-coverts.

4cy Mediterranean Gull are always very difficult to age and presumed it's not possible to exclude 3cy or older advanced Mediterranean Gulls > 5cy. Note the black spots on the outer webs of p9 and the extensive black line on the outer web of p10.
